Even though he was an Englishman, famed author George Orwell made it a point to head to Spain during the Spanish Civil War in order to join the fight for democracy, mainly out of idealism. Today, his path through one portion of the war is remembered by a trail of recreated fortifications.

The Spanish Civil War was seen as the front against Fascism. It may not be as well-known as his fictional explorations of totalitarian states, but George Orwell’s memoir Homage to Catalonia remains one of his most singular works. It’s an account of Orwell (aka Eric Blair)’s time fighting in the Spanish Civil War, and it gives a sense of the complex nature of the factions fighting there.
